GULF STREAM OCEAN CURRENT MODEL GRAPHIC ORGANIZER

FINAL WEATHER AND CLIMATE UNIT BIG MODEL
helpful resources in your binder

  • act 10 reading and questions on climate
  • act. 6- sea and land breeze
  • act. 4 climate chart
  • act. 9 gulf stream and model
  • page 69 act. 13 cold and warm front

Gulf Stream and ocean current model

Thursdays Classwork:

On white computer paper- (turn finished model into blue bin for a grade)

Model how Ocean Currents cause Climates using the GULF STREAM as your example

Gotta Have it List & other HINTS!
·         Warm and cold ocean currents cause warm/cold climates
·         Gulf Stream carries warm water from the tropics to Western Europe causing the weather in Western Europe (Paris, France) to be warmer and wetter.
·         Warm/cold ocean caused by direct/indirect sun rays
·         Warm/cold ocean currents caused by Coriolis Effect
·         Ocean currents & evaporation cause climates

·        Earth’s rotation causes à winds (Coriolis Effect) à ocean currents à warm and cold currents due to direct/indirect sunlight à evaporation à climates à weather patterns (warm/wet/cold/dry)

·        Use brain pop/act. 9 reading handout
·        Use Antoine and Maddie text thread
·        Ocean current world map and ocean temperature map
·        Book page 45 and 56

RESEARCH in modeling NB

  • What two surfaces make up Earth?
  • What is wind?
  • Draw what causes wind.
  • What is high pressure?
  • What is low pressure?
  • What is a SEA BREEZE? *draw model
  • What is a LAND BREEZE? *draw model
  • How does wind cause weather? (hint- prevailing winds, write into google wind causing weather in Stamford,CT- think snow days in Stamford vs. Danbury)
  • jet stream? flying from CA to NY time
  • what is the difference between a wind vane and an anemometer?
  • What is the Coriolis effect?
