Weather forecasting practice
Assignment: Fill out the charts attached in classwork for weather forecasting for Stamford, CT.

Click on today’s weather and the five day forecast using weather.com or wunderground.com.

Then for day 2- globally see how the weather patterns are different around the world.

weather forecasting help

https://www.timeanddate.com/time/zone/italy/rome

Things to think about:

Why is weather/temperature/times different all over the world?

Are seasons global?

Does the tropics ever have snow/cold weather? Why or why not?

What causes these temperature differences?

Why was it cold in Moscow and Alaska but warm in Italy and Zambia?

Assignment to complete: Temperature Conversion Practice

  • Since we are starting weather, we need to know Fahrenheit for the USA temperatures and Celsius for the rest of the world!
  • Today’s work is to practice those math conversions. Try your best!
  • You may use a calculator.
  • Since this is a pdf, you might have to type your answers in a separate google doc and send it back to me to grade. Some kids found a way to ‘fill in’ the worksheet and saved that and sent it back.

week one of online learning

Check google classroom daily to complete your assignments for all classes.

Also, check my blog for answer keys, videos, and hints!

This week:

Monday:
BY FRIDAY: post your lorax paragraph, mineral research and honors science fair document to google classroom. I want you to practice using google classroom by posting some assignments we have already completed together. Practice uploading your work. Do not post in comments- I can't see it!

The assignment for today on google classroom is the Earth Resources (ER) table topics to review for the earth resources quiz eventually. It is on performance matters but I have to see if I will be allowed to release it and have you take it at home on performance matters. I'll let you guys know.

Tuesday: finish up your table topics review and earth resources test review sheet

Wednesday: rock layers activity 9 questions

make sure act. 9, table topics, timeline, and ER review sheet are all done. The answer key should post on my blog automatically you may just need to hit older posts

Thursday: work on your weather and climate unit word list and cover page

Friday: temperature conversion practice worksheet

Stay safe everyone!

This week in science class:
Monday: All classes: work on Earth’s resources group model and get it almost done! You will only have 20 minutes to work on it tomorrow. Bring it home for HW if you need to work on it.
Title: How does the Earth create resources and how do humans use them? Use your 13 questions and mini models and the gotta have it list to help you.

Tuesday: 20 minutes to complete models. When done, work on the “rest of the Earth Resources unit vocabulary chart” using the textbook.

Wednesday: finish the vocabulary chart and turn it in for a grade. Pick a mineral you like- Miss Klein has two books in the classroom you can flip through or use page 18 of the textbook.
Honors: procedure writing lesson (edit and revise your own procedure)

Thursday: mineral research on Chromebook
Friday: complete mineral research- print in color for extra credit!

·         Monday: Fossil Time cards
·         Tuesday: Geological Event cards
·         Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: geological time scale timeline

·         Personal Timescale Project
·         Review Sheet
·         ER Unit Quiz
·         WEATHER AND CLIMATE UNIT!

Science Fair Tips

Wed: problem questions, independent and dependent variables
Thurs: hypothesis, control, constants, materials
HW: Plan out your procedure

Here is an example (Szymon's experiment)

Problem: What amount of water is best for keeping a cactus alive for four weeks?

IV: amount of water (3 mL, 6 mL, 9 mL)
DV: number of needles dropped from cactus (sign that its unhealthy)
constants: same cactus plant type and size, same location, same time frame for monitoring growth, same growing environment, same temperature water added
control: cactus with no water ( 0mL)
Hypothesis: If I give a small cactus 6 mL of water, then it will be healthy and survive for four weeks without losing too many needles because cacti do not need much water to survive, but too much water can kill them.

1.     Gather materials.
2.    Set up four cactus plants on a tray on the kitchen table.
3.    Number the plants 1, 2, 3, and 4 with a sharpie.
4.    For plant 1, add no water. This is the control.
5.    For plant 2, add 3 mL of water (fill a cup from the sink) using a pipette. Measure the temperature of the water if possible.
6.    For plant 3, add 6 mL of water.
7.    For plant 4, add 9 mL of water.
8.    Let the plants sit on the kitchen table for 4 weeks.
9.    After each week, or every Thursday, count the number of needles that fall from the cactus and take a picture using an iphone. Label the week as week 1. Check the soil, color of the cactus, as well as count the needles that fall.
10.  Repeat step 9 for each of four weeks.
11. After four weeks, determine which amount of water kept the cactus the healthiest and record data.

Last week we did a popcorn demonstration to model and explain the importance of non-renewable
resources Earth provides. We also watched the LORAX by Dr. Suess to examine the
symbolism behind his message.

Reflect on the quote below. Provide examples from the popcorn demonstration
and LORAX chart to explain what you have learned about environmentalism.
Write a 5 sentence paragraph of your thoughts.

Theme Ideas: survival of the fittest, habitat destruction, rebirth (seed), smog, water pollution,
animals fleeing for food, competition, economic supply & demand, environmental activists, consumption
