STEM EARTHQUAKE STRUCTURE ALTERNATE GRADED ACTIVITY

·
Must read the articles and take 10 notes.

·        Then, write an 8 sentence paragraph on google docs and share with Miss Klein for a substitution grade. You should write about if you had unlimited materials and money, how would you design an earthquake safe sky scrapper. Why would you make the decisions you made?

Make sure your paragraph contains the following design aspects:
·         Tuned mass damper
·         Base isolation
·         Flexibility
·         P and S seismic waves
·         Earthquake resistant materials
·         Copy and paste images or certain design features- make it like a sales pitch

Modeling Tips!

·         Models are either individual, partner, or group
o    Always do an individual model first in your notebook to get YOUR ideas down before being influenced by others opinions

·         Always have a rubric and gotta have it list with what needs to be on the model
o    Read over these carefully prior to starting your model!

·         Students given a focused essential question to ‘draw’ or ‘model’ the answer ex: “what causes mountains, volcanoes, and earthquakes on Earth?”
o    Research this question online- watch videos, discuss the answer out loud, write notes in your notebook- make sure you are sure of the answer before you start drawing!

·         Students do many labs and activities to answer this question before they are expected to model/draw it
o    Go back in your notes and review these for help!

·         analysis questions to answer/we go over to ensure they know the answer to the essential question before drawing it
o    Go back in your notes and review these for help! Go to blog and look at Miss Klein’s answer key too!

·         Students need to make an individual model first with their own ideas then discuss with their table before making the group model
o    Again- Always do an individual model first in your notebook to get YOUR ideas down before being influenced by others opinions

EXAMPLE NOTES FOR CONTINENTAL DRIFT VIDEO

Write down EVERY speech bubble and the 4 evidence bubbles

What do you see when you look at the continents of the Earth? Like SA and Africa?
Alfred Wegener was a German meteorologist- he looked at a lot of maps and noticed the puzzle pieces. He came up with the idea of Pangea and how it was ripped apart.
Wegner felt- The continents are moving! And came up with proof
Super continent of Pangea- the supercontinents 250 MYA
“Entire Earth”

4 pieces of evidence that Wegner put together to prove Pangea drifted
1-    The continents appear to fit together – the apparent fit of the continents
The coastlines of the continents fit together like the pieces of a puzzle

2. fossils- mesosaurus ancient reptile- can only be found eastern SA and the western coast of Africa – only in fresh water
Fossil correlation (matching up fossils on either side of the ocean)

3. rock and mountain correlation- identical rocks and mountain structure

4. Paleoclimate data- bituminous coal- coal has been found in cold regions and glacial evidence has been found in warm regions

Plate Tectonics Model
Write on top of paper:

What causes MOUNTAINS, VOLCANOES, & EQ on Earth and how has the surface of Earth changed over time?

*answer the 8 questions
*show Miss Klein to make sure they are correct
*draw the answers to the 8 questions in the boxes
*Figure Out: WHAT DO ALL 8 mini models have in common??
*Draw big model - USE ACT 10 MODEL PACKET (simulation)
*highlight plate boundaries on map provided (arrows) color the land (continents green)
*highlight Ring of Fire on map provided (map of the world showing major countries) label the oceans

DONE!
